Our Asphalt Installation Process

We want to make our asphalt installation process as clear as possible for both current customers and those interested in our services. We have decades of experience as a local commercial and residential asphalt paving company in the St. Paul and Hudson area, so we understand what it takes to create a driveway that you can be proud of. We are available to talk through your options and to discuss any warranties or costs associated with your driveway installation. From March to October (weather permitting), we can either install a brand new asphalt driveway or renovate an existing one. Contact us to find out more.

The process for installing hot mix asphalt (HMA) typically includes the following steps:

  1. Obtaining a quote: The customer contacts the asphalt contractor to request a quote for the project. The contractor will assess the site and provide a cost estimate for the project.

  2. Prepping the site: The contractor will prepare the site by clearing any debris and grading the area to ensure proper drainage.

  3. Laying the base: A base layer of crushed stone is laid to provide a stable foundation for the HMA.

  4. Asphalting: The HMA is delivered to the site and spread over the base layer using a paving machine. The asphalt is then compacted with a roller to ensure a smooth and level surface.

  5. Finishing: The surface is finished by applying a fine layer of asphalt to fill any small imperfections and to ensure a smooth surface.

  6. Job completion: The job is considered complete after the asphalt has cooled and any necessary cleanup is performed.

Note: The process may vary depending on the specific project and customer approval.

2 - Project Prep Work

In order to guarantee your driveway will last for 30+ years, our crew must carry out certain tasks during the initial visit. These include getting rid of the old concrete or asphalt, creating additions, and incorporating new base materials where required. Furthermore, the soil must be graded and compacted. To ensure the crew can get these tasks done effectively, please ensure that the driveway or parking lot and its vicinity are vehicle-free for the duration of the visit. Once we are done, you are allowed to use your driveway – though your car should be driven with caution, since it will be in contact with the base layer.

3 - Asphalt Paving

In commercial paving projects, the thickness of the asphalt layer may vary depending on the type of vehicle traffic and the load it will be bearing. A minimum thickness of 2.5 inches is commonly used for both residential and commercial asphalt paving projects, but it can be thicker depending on the specific requirements of the project. The asphalt is installed using a commercial paving machine and then compacted with a commercial roller to achieve a finished thickness of 2 inches. This helps ensure a stable, durable, and smooth surface for vehicle traffic.
